There are numerous methods for regasification of cryogenic fluids and the selection of an optimum process depends on plant site location, climatic conditions and the throughput capacities. Among the various types of vaporizers, the ambient air vaporizer (AAV) uses air in the atmosphere as the heat exchange medium. Therefore, it is regarded as an eco-friendly heat exchanger. The performance of ambient air vaporizers depends on the cryogenic fluid inlet and outlet conditions and more importantly the site conditions and environment factors, such ambient temperature, relative humidity, altitude, wind, solar radiation, and proximity to adjacent structures. However, owing to the fuzziness and frost formed on the surface of the AAV, the vaporization efficiency decreases. Also due to excessive thermal cycling, there may be mechanical damages in fins and support boxes results in a leakage of cryogenic fluids. This paper examines many factors associated with the use of atmospheric vaporization systems including safety and risk. The paper also provides a guideline in the selection of cryogenic vaporization system. (author)
