Pneumatic Couplings - What Are Their Constituent Materials
Pneumatic couplings are used to connect compressed air tools to compressed air lines. Pneumatic couplings allow the tool to easily connect or disconnect hoses or pipes under pressure.
In the pneumatic industry, pneumatic couplings are known by many names. For example, air hose couplings, compressed air couplings, pneumatic couplings or compressor couplings refer to the same product. Couplings can also be used instead of couplings. We will use all these names interchangeably in this article. Compressed air couplings are available in different variants for various applications. However, hoses and couplings must be suitable for the particular compressed air system.

Quick release couplings are quick disconnect couplings used in hydraulic or pneumatic systems to quickly connect lines without loss of fluid or fluid pressure. Quick release couplings are designed to connect and disconnect immediately without the use of tools, thus eliminating the need to close valves, drain systems, refill fluids and/or remove trapped gases during disconnection and replacement of components. For this reason, they are particularly useful in production applications where speed is critical or time-dependent. Quick couplings can also save valuable time spent building or removing piping systems.
Materials for quick release couplings are typically selected based on the fluid being transferred through the system. Other selection factors include cost, flexibility, environmental conditions, and the desired pressure rating. Material options include different types of plastics or metals.
Lightweight and corrosion resistant. Aluminum is commonly used for piping and is the preferred fitting material for aluminum pipe. Aluminum itself has a low tensile strength and is used when high corrosion resistance is required.
Strong, durable, corrosion resistant, with high temperature ductility and good electrical conductivity. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and is a commonly used material for quick release fittings because of its workability and excellent performance characteristics.
Strong and highly abrasion resistant. Cast iron fittings and tubes are primarily used in building construction for sanitary, storm drain, waste and vent pipe applications because they resist abrasive materials such as sand, gravel, solid waste and debris.
Extremely resistant to corrosion and has excellent electrical conductivity. Copper fittings are important for many plumbing and heating applications and are commonly used in residential water supply lines.
Durable and strong, with a high degree of heat resistance. Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon - it is often alloyed with other metals to improve its corrosion resistance and durability. Carbon steel is alloyed with a higher level of carbon to improve durability and strength.
Relatively strong, with excellent chemical and corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is a steel alloy containing more than 10.5% chromium, providing excellent corrosion resistance for sanitary applications as well as applications dealing with corrosive fluids and materials.
A rigid plastic available in a variety of pressure ratings. PVC couplers connect via threaded or solvent welded (glued) connections. Standard applications include cold water supply and drainage.
A soft, flexible and tough thermoplastic - even at low temperatures. PE couplers have excellent electrical properties, but are less temperature resistant. They also have very good chemical resistance, but are susceptible to environmental stress cracking; they have poor UV resistance (unless modified) and poor barrier properties, except for water.
A thermoplastic material with excellent cold flow, biaxial strength and yield elongation properties. It is similar to PVC but can be used in exposed applications due to its UV, weathering and ozone resistance.
Quick connectors can be specifically designed and rated for a particular application or industry.
Chemical quick release couplings - Chemical quick release couplings can be designed for specific chemicals such as fuels, oils, solvents, acids, bases, etc.
Gas couplings - Gas quick release couplings are designed for explosive and toxic gases such as propane and phosgene.
